Quick picks

Choose by the task. Read the detailed buying assessment and available full reviews before checking the retailer offer.

These are complementary operations, not five versions of one tool. Door trimming permissions, stock preparation, joint design and system-specific consumables govern what is appropriate.

HOW TO CHOOSE

What matters for the work

Preparation and fitting are different jobs

A thickness planer needs an appropriate reference and supported stock. A handheld planer addresses permitted edge adjustments. Neither should be bought as a substitute for understanding warped stock or the trimming restrictions on a manufactured door.

Choose the joint design first

Biscuit slots, loose-tenon mortises and pocket-hole assemblies have different roles and consumables. A specialist joiner earns its cost when the required joint recurs. Manufacturer strength claims are not our structural tests or design approval.

Include the workshop around the machine

Clamps, cutters, knives, consumables, material support and collection belong in the purchase. Prepared timber or employer equipment can be better initial value for occasional tasks. Add specialist machinery only when a clear recurring requirement is missing.

BUYING QUESTIONS

Before you choose

Does a thickness planer replace a jointer?

No. Establish the appropriate flat reference and stock preparation method before thicknessing. A handheld fitting planer serves another operation again.
