Quick picks

Choose by the task. Read the detailed buying assessment and available full reviews before checking the retailer offer.

Thermal cameras see surface-temperature patterns, not through walls. A cool or warm patch is a diagnostic clue, not proof of moisture or the exact location of a hidden pipe. Confirm findings with suitable moisture or plumbing checks.

HOW TO CHOOSE

What matters for the work

Surface pattern versus diagnosis

Surface temperature depends on several conditions, including heating, airflow and material. Use a thermal image to guide further checks. It cannot by itself prove a leak, identify hidden pipe depth or establish that a wall is dry.

Phone attachment or standalone

TC001 depends on supported Android hardware and software. Standalone tools avoid that dependency but have their own storage and export workflows. Check the complete recording process before buying for customer reports.

Native detector and context

Compare the native thermal detector, field of view, focus and image export. Display pixel count is not thermal resolution. Visual-image blending provides context but does not add hidden-object visibility.

FLIR

C5 Compact Thermal Imaging Camera

Best for: Home inspectors and building professionals who want a compact radiometric thermal camera with easy image documentation and reporting workflow.

The FLIR C5 is a pocket-size thermal camera built for professionals who need to find and document temperature anomalies quickly. For home inspectors, its useful combination is a 160 × 120 radiometric thermal sensor, FLIR MSX image enhancement, a 5 MP visual camera, LED light, touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi/cloud workflow.

The C5 is a strong professional inspection camera when documentation matters almost as much as finding the anomaly. Its thermal resolution is not high-end by specialist thermography standards, but MSX, a visual camera, cloud connectivity, compact size and rugged IP54/2 m drop design make it practical for routine building inspections. Buyers who need maximum thermal detail should step up to a higher-resolution camera; buyers who only need occasional spot checks may be able to spend less.

  • 160 × 120 true thermal sensor
  • MSX adds visible detail to thermal imagery
  • 5 MP visual camera plus LED flashlight
IR resolution
160 × 120 (19,200 pixels)
Visual camera
5 MP
Temperature range
-20 to 400°C / -4 to 752°F

Main tradeoff: 160 × 120 is modest compared with higher-end thermal cameras

Standalone thermal-detail comparison

HIKMICRO

B01 Handheld Thermal Camera

Best for: Inspectors who want a separate thermal instrument and prioritize native thermal detail.

The HIKMICRO B01 is the standalone option to consider when native thermal detail matters more than a pocket-camera format. Its 256 × 192 detector provides more thermal sampling points than the FLIR C5. That is a specification comparison, not a finding from side-by-side field testing.

Shortlist B01 for a dedicated thermal instrument with a useful detector resolution. Compare C5 if its visible-image context and reporting workflow matter more than the B01's higher native pixel count. Either camera still needs an inspector to interpret and document what the image shows.

  • 256 × 192 native thermal detector
  • Own display; independent of a phone
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
Model
B01, not B01S or B20
Native thermal resolution

Klein Tools

TI250 Rechargeable Thermal Imager

Best for: Inspectors and maintenance users who prefer simple standalone thermal viewing.

Klein TI250 suits buyers who want a dedicated screen and simple thermal viewing without attaching a sensor to a phone. The current manufacturer page advertises over 19,200 thermal pixels. Older documentation differs, so check the version offered rather than relying on the model name alone.

TI250 belongs on a shortlist for straightforward spot checks and independent thermal viewing. Compare B01 and C5 if higher native resolution, visible-photo context or a documentation workflow is the main reason for buying. It is our simple standalone option rather than a premium recommendation.

  • Dedicated display
  • USB-rechargeable format
  • Adjustable emissivity

TOPDON TC001 Android Thermal Camera

TOPDON

TC001 Thermal Imaging Camera for Android

Best for: Android users who prefer app-based capture and can validate their exact device.

TOPDON TC001 makes sense when a compatible Android phone is already central to your inspection routine. Its 256 × 192 detector connects through USB-C and draws power from the host. It exchanges the independence of a separate camera for a compact sensor and app-based capture.

Consider TC001 for a supported Android setup you can verify before purchase. Native resolution is a strength on paper, but the phone, connector and app are part of the instrument. Choose a standalone camera if thermal imaging must stay available while your phone handles other tasks.

  • 256 × 192 native thermal detector
  • Compact attachment
  • Powered by the host

OPTION 5
FLIR TG165-X Thermal Camera

Spot-check format
Spot-check format

FLIR

TG165-X MSX Thermal Camera

Best for: Targeted temperature checks where a grip format and visual outline suit the task.

FLIR TG165-X is a spot-check instrument that adds a thermal view to a temperature-measurement task. It combines an 80 × 60 detector, MSX visual outlines and a laser-guided measurement area. The grip format suits targeted checks; its detector has fewer pixels than the other cameras in this shortlist.

Consider TG165-X for targeted temperature checks with recognizable visual outlines. Compare C5 or B01 if detailed building scans and inspection reports are the main task. MSX adds context, not additional measured thermal pixels.

  • MSX visual outlines
  • Laser indicates spot measurement area
  • Standalone grip format
Native thermal resolution
80 × 60 / 4,800 pixels
Spot distance ratio
24:1
Published temperature range
−13 to 572°F / −25 to 300°C

Main tradeoff: 80 × 60 detector limits native thermal detail

BUYING QUESTIONS

Before you choose

Can a thermal camera see a pipe through a wall?

No. It shows surface-temperature patterns that may reflect a nearby heating or cooling influence. Other evidence is needed to establish a pipe’s route or a leak.

Does TC001 work with an iPhone?

This TC001 recommendation is for compatible Android devices. Check TOPDON’s current compatibility requirements; do not assume every USB-C phone is supported.

Do I still need a moisture meter?

Often yes. Thermal patterns and moisture indicators answer different questions. Confirm the suspected condition using suitable checks.
