Best Voltage Testers for Electricians: Contact and Non-Contact

Klein NCVT-3P is our pocket screening pick. Fluke 1AC II and Klein NCVT-1P are simpler AC indicators. For contact measurement, compare Klein ET60 or Fluke T5-600. A non-contact pen does not prove absence of voltage.

Quick picks

Choose by the task. Read the detailed buying assessment and available full reviews before checking the retailer offer.

These are two tool roles in one buying guide: non-contact screening and contact testing. They are not substitutes for one another or for a required safe-isolation procedure.

HOW TO CHOOSE

What matters for the work

Decide which role is missing

A non-contact indicator is a convenient screening aid. A contact tester has a different measurement role. Choose the correct instrument for the procedure, and do not treat an indicator that remains silent as proof of a safe circuit.

Check the range and current type

Most pen indicators detect AC in a stated voltage band. Sensitivity to lower voltage is model-specific. Contact testers also differ in their AC/DC functions, so check the exact model rather than a brand-wide claim.

Treat the tester as an instrument

Read the manufacturer instructions, inspect the equipment and follow the required verification procedure. Flashlights and audible alerts are conveniences. They do not override the tool’s limitations, category rating or workplace rules.

Klein Tools

NCVT-3P Dual-Range Voltage Tester

Best for: Trained users wanting a pocket AC screening indicator with a flashlight.

NCVT-3P combines two AC indication ranges with a flashlight. It is a practical secondary tool in a service bag because it gives the screening task a dedicated pocket instrument.

Buy it for screening convenience, and keep the distinction from contact verification clear. Lower-range sensitivity is useful only when it matches the circuits in your work; the pen is not a replacement for the approved testing procedure.

Fluke

1AC II VoltAlert

Best for: Users wanting a dedicated AC indicator with Fluke’s stated self-test behavior.

The 1AC II is an AC indication pen. Its appeal is a focused pocket role, with the manufacturer’s VoltBeat self-test feature, rather than numeric readings.

Compare the US voltage-range version carefully; regional variants can differ. A self-test feature is useful information about the pen, but it does not remove the need for the verification process required by your workplace.

Klein Tools

NCVT-1P Voltage Tester

Best for: Users who only need the stated standard AC screening range.

NCVT-1P is the simpler pen choice in this shortlist. It covers a stated 50–1000 V AC indication band, which should be checked against the actual purpose of the tool.

A suitable shortlist candidate when a straightforward AC indicator is enough. Choose NCVT-3P if its lower range and flashlight solve real problems; neither pen is an absence-of-voltage instrument.

Klein Tools

ET60 Electronic AC/DC Voltage Tester

Best for: Users needing a dedicated contact AC/DC voltage tester within its stated limits.

ET60 is a contact tester powered by the applied circuit voltage. Its low-impedance design is a different tool role from the pen indicators listed here.

Consider it when dedicated contact testing is what is missing from the kit. Circuit-powered operation should not be mistaken for a guarantee about every failure mode; use the manual and required instrument-check procedure.

  • Low-impedance design
  • No battery required for voltage indication

Fluke

T5-600 Electrical Tester

Best for: Users who want a compact electrical tester with several basic measurement roles.

T5-600 combines contact voltage testing with continuity and an OpenJaw AC-current function. That makes it more of a compact service instrument than a pocket voltage pen.

Choose it if those combined roles reduce the instruments you need to carry for appropriate tasks. The open jaw is still a particular current-measurement format, not a substitute for every clamp meter or precision diagnostic instrument.

  • Compact service format

BUYING QUESTIONS

Before you choose

Can a non-contact voltage pen prove a circuit is dead?

No. It is an indication tool with limitations. Use the appropriate instrument and safe-isolation procedure required for the work.

Do all voltage pens detect DC?

No. These pen picks are AC indicators. Check the instrument’s specified current type and range.

Is a voltage tester the same as a multimeter?

No. A dedicated tester focuses on a smaller set of checks. A multimeter offers a broader measurement range; suitability depends on the task.
