Best Clamp Meters for Electricians: AC, DC and Service Work

Start with Fluke 323 for straightforward AC load checks. Choose Fluke 325 or Klein CL390 when DC current matters, CL810 when its broader range and inrush feature match your work, or CL220 for a simpler AC-current and temperature kit.

Quick picks

Choose by the task. Read the detailed buying assessment and available full reviews before checking the retailer offer.

AC/DC voltage measurement does not mean a clamp measures DC current. The jaw capability is the first specification to compare. Klein CL810 replaces the discontinued CL800 in this shortlist.

HOW TO CHOOSE

What matters for the work

AC or DC through the jaw?

Identify the current type you need to measure. Fluke 323 and Klein CL220 are AC-current choices; Fluke 325, CL390 and CL810 support AC/DC current. A meter can read DC voltage through leads without measuring DC current through its clamp.

Range is not resolution

A larger maximum amp rating does not automatically make small loads easier to assess. Compare measurement ranges, published accuracy and conductor access. For startup behavior, confirm an inrush function instead of assuming a hold button captures it.

Keep a multimeter role in the kit

A clamp suits current measurements around an appropriate conductor; a multimeter serves other diagnostic tasks. Check category ratings, lead suitability and your work procedure. None of these buying recommendations authorizes work outside your training.

Fluke

323 True-RMS Clamp Meter

Best for: Residential and commercial service technicians who need AC current and already have a primary multimeter.

The 323 is the focused AC-current member of Fluke’s 320 family. Its appeal is an uncomplicated clamp for load-related service work, rather than another instrument with every possible measurement function.

Choose it when the job requires routine AC load checks and the rest of the kit already covers temperature or more specialized measurements. Compare 325 before purchase if any regular job needs DC current: buying an AC-only jaw for that task would be the wrong saving.

Fluke

325 True-RMS Clamp Meter

Best for: Technicians whose permitted work includes both AC and DC current measurements.

Fluke 325 adds DC jaw current to the 320-family service format. That is a functional distinction worth paying attention to; many similarly named clamps measure DC voltage but only AC current.

Compare it with 323 by the jobs that need DC, temperature or frequency rather than by the family name. It remains a general service clamp, so verify any specialist logging or inrush requirement separately.

Klein Tools

CL390 TRMS AC/DC Clamp Meter

Best for: Technicians wanting AC/DC clamp current with temperature and other diagnostic functions.

CL390 combines AC/DC clamp measurement with a broad set of lead-based functions. Its category rating and actual ranges are more relevant to choosing it than how many symbols appear on the dial.

A useful alternative to the Fluke pair when the listed functions align with the work. Check the included temperature probe and current manual; we have not tested display readability or comparative accuracy.

Klein Tools

CL810 TRMS Clamp Meter with Worklight

Best for: Technicians who need its 600 A AC/DC range and documented inrush function.

The CL810 offers a broader current range and an inrush function alongside its worklight and diagnostic measurements. Those additions are reasons to investigate it for maintenance work, rather than proof of better measurements at every load.

Select it when range or startup-current assessment is a real requirement. The discontinued CL800’s specifications should not be carried into this model; evaluate CL810 and its supplied accessories directly.

Klein Tools

CL220 AC Clamp Meter with Temperature

Best for: Users whose tasks need AC load checks and a temperature function.

CL220 is an AC-current option with temperature measurement and an integrated non-contact indicator. That feature mix can suit a straightforward kit, but it should not be evaluated as though it had CL390’s AC/DC TRMS specification.

Choose on verified requirements, not an assumed budget advantage. If DC current or waveform-sensitive AC measurements matter, compare CL390 or the Fluke options before ordering.

BUYING QUESTIONS

Before you choose

Can Fluke 323 measure DC current?

No. Its jaw measures AC current. Fluke 325 adds DC current through the jaw; do not confuse DC voltage capability with DC clamp current.

Do electricians need both a clamp and a multimeter?

They serve different measurement tasks. Start with the instruments required by your work, then add a clamp when load measurements justify it.

Is a 600 A meter always better than 400 A?

No. Required current type, range resolution, accuracy and access matter more than the largest maximum rating.
